Five minds for the future: drei Besrpechungen zu einem Buch
Onlife-Lehre in Corona-Zeiten?
Immune Requirements of Post-Exposure Immunization with Modified Vaccinia Ankara of Lethally Infected Mice
Current prophylactic vaccines work via the induction of B and T cell mediated memory that effectively control further replication of the pathogen after entry. In the case of therapeutic or post-exposure vaccinations the situation is far more complex, because the pathogen has time to establish itself in the host, start producing immune-inhibitory molecules and spread into distant organs. So far it is unclear which immune parameters have to be activated in order to thwart an existing lethal infection. Using the mousepox model, we investigated the immunological mechanisms responsible for a successful post-exposure immunization with modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA). In contrast to intranasal application of MVA, we found that intravenous immunization fully protected mice infected with ectromelia virus (ECTV) when applied three days after infection. Intravenous MVA immunization induced strong innate and adaptive immune responses in lethally infected mice. By using various gene-targeted and transgenic mouse strains we show that NK cells, CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells and antibodies are essential for the clearance of ECTV after post-exposure immunization. Post-exposure immunization with MVA is an effective measure in a murine model of human smallpox. MVA activates innate and adaptive immune parameters and only a combination thereof is able to purge ECTV from its host. These data not only provide a basis for therapeutic vaccinations in the case of the deliberate release of pathogenic poxviruses but possibly also for the treatment of chronic infections and cancer
The Multiplanet System TOI-421: A Warm Neptune and a Super Puffy Mini-Neptune Transiting a G9 V Star in a Visual Binary
We report the discovery of a warm Neptune and a hot sub-Neptune transiting TOI-421 (BD-14 1137, TIC 94986319), a bright (V = 9.9) G9 dwarf star in a visual binary system observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) space mission in Sectors 5 and 6. We performed ground-based follow-up observationsâcomprised of Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope transit photometry, NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging, and FIbre-fed EchellĂ© Spectrograph, CORALIE, High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, High Resolution Ăchelle Spectrometer, and Planet Finder Spectrograph high-precision Doppler measurementsâand confirmed the planetary nature of the 16 day transiting candidate announced by the TESS team. We discovered an additional radial velocity signal with a period of five days induced by the presence of a second planet in the system, which we also found to transit its host star. We found that the inner mini-Neptune, TOI-421 b, has an orbital period of P_b = 5.19672 ± 0.00049 days, a mass of M_b = 7.17 ± 0.66 Mâ, and a radius of R_b = 2.68^(+0.19)_(-0.18) Râ, whereas the outer warm Neptune, TOI-421 c, has a period of Pc = 16.06819 ± 0.00035 days, a mass of M_c = 16.42^(+1.06)_(-1.04) Mâ, a radius of R_c = 5.09^(+0.16)_(-0.15) Râ and a density of Ï_c = 0.685^(+0.080)_(-0.072) g cmâ»Âł. With its characteristics, the outer planet (Ï_c = 0.685^(+0.080)_(-0.072) g cmâ»Âł) is placed in the intriguing class of the super-puffy mini-Neptunes. TOI-421 b and TOI-421 c are found to be well-suited for atmospheric characterization. Our atmospheric simulations predict significant Lyα transit absorption, due to strong hydrogen escape in both planets, as well as the presence of detectable CH4 in the atmosphere of TOI-421 c if equilibrium chemistry is assumed
From 12th to 14th February, 2001 the MOFET Institute for Curriculum Planning and Teacher Training (Tel Aviv/ Israel) ran an international virtual conference. Based on this example the following text discusses chances and limits of virtual conferences (with special reference to pedagogics). It centers on general questions concerning communication in online conferences. First a short description of the conference will be given. Then issues in the field of language, space, time and integration in the working process, as well as computer mediated and written communication will be discussed. Eventually a summary and a prospect on further possible ways of integrating online-conferences in the international scientific discussion will be given. (DIPF/Orig.
Learning and teaching in adult education. Contemporary theories
Learning is a key issue in education. Being familiar with contemporary learning theory, therefore, is an essential prerequisite for education scholars and practitioners alike. Virtually any educational effort involves learning, both on the part of the learner and on the part of the teacher. It seems obvious and necessary, therefore, to explore learning processes from a theoretical point of view. Fortunately, education researchers and theorists have produced a growing body of knowledge on learning and teaching in recent years. Internationally acclaimed scholars such as Peter Jarvis, Knud Illeris, or Ference Marton have provided building blocks for a contemporary outlook on learning in educational situations. This book offers an overview on the most important contributions, combining them to form a person-oriented concept of learning and teaching. From the Contents: Part One: Theories of Learning: A Field of Approaches towards the Learning of Adults Of Learning Triangles and Beyond Relational Perspectives on Learning Logical Models and Stages of Learning Comprehensive Approaches Looking Beyond One s Own Nose: Psychological Approaches and Neurosciences Part Two: The Art of Teaching. Exploring Concepts of Adult Learning to Address Didactic Challenges Didactics and Didactic Models Reflections on Learning Time, Person, Lifeworld: Cornerstones of Didactic Theory. (Verlag
